There is a danger that when the TU collapses it could cause a black hole capable of destroying the PU as well. This is what happens in the movie, there is a corruption in time and at midnight on October 2nd a TU is created.

The next 28 days are now set in this alternate reality. Shortly after the TU starts Frank wakes Donnie up and lures him out of the house.

A few minutes later a huge jet engine falls though the rip in time and lands in Donnie's bedroom. We are already within the TU when both those events occur. Unfortunately we never find out what caused the TU to begin, it's just an unexplained phenomenon. The Artifact is the first sign of evidence that a TU has been created and are always made from metal.

In this case the Artifact is a giant jet engine. Where the Artifact originally comes from is never disclosed. It was most likely created as the TU was being formed. The TU is an exact copy of the PU with one of everything copied into it.

During the copying process there was a glitch and two jet engines were formed. The second engine has nowhere to go as it already exists so it's just dumped where the TU began, over Donnie's house. The Artifact makes the TU unstable; it can't handle having the anomaly of a duplicate object within it.

In order for the TU to unravel without forming a black hole it must once again be an exact copy of the PU. By removing one of the duplicate jet engines it will balance out the Universe allowing the TU to collapse safely.

The only way to remove the Artifact is to send it through a portal into the PU. This person is chosen seemingly at random and in this case Donnie is the chosen one. As Donnie was at the epicentre of the TU this is most likely why he was selected.

This person is usually blessed with some supernatural powers during their time in the TU to help them with their quest. Some of these include increased strength, mind control, the ability to conjure fire and water and telekinesis. A troubled teenager is plagued by visions of a large bunny rabbit that manipulates him to commit a series of crimes, after narrowly escaping a bizarre accident. Set in a Virginia suburb against the backdrop of the presidential campaign, Donnie Darko Jake Gyllenhaal is a troubled teen whose hallucinations may be just a product of his own brewing schizophrenia or the keys to averting the end of the world.

The young anti-hero receives cryptic messages from a sinister six-foot rabbit named Frank, who tells him that the clock is ticking down to the apocalypse and urges him to commit destructive acts that spark controversy and upheaval in the conservative community, and ultimately push him toward his tragic destiny.

There are many examples throughout the film that support this diagnosis. Donnie views this as a device of time travel, which in all respects it is. Donnie views Franks as a persecutory individual seeking to cause harm, as well as one teacher in particular: Mrs. Katherine Farmer, who Donnie classifies as a foe with harmful authoritative power. Nevertheless, madness does not have to be accompanied by ignorance. Donnie shows many signs throughout the film of having high intelligence.

Frank breaks the conscious psyche allowing the subconscious to dominate the thought process of the mind. Donnie views the individuals who have a strong stance and authority within the school as individuals who force their personal bias upon others under the notation of being right. His subconscious rules the school as a opponent force trying to corrupt his intention of learning with polarized thinking.

Since Donnie read the novel, the scene was imprinted in his subconscious. Reality consists of an individual being able to make choices from the world around them, they can perceive what is right and what is wrong; good and bad.

The thought process regulates what is reality and what is abstract. When the laws of human nature are thrown away one would act like there subconscious, no filter, no hesitation to commit any acts, no consideration for the punishment s held against them, what's left is only there desires and there will to achieve there goal s.

There are numerous scenes throughout the film where Donnie is in the presence of Frank. In one occurrence, when Frank and Donnie meet for the third time, Frank appears in his bathroom. Eventually his visions begin to encompass what he believes to be a kind of time travel — an ability to see, in a physical form, the near future.

Everything in the film reaches a fever pitch of dread and foreboding as it hurtles towards the climax, a puzzler of an ending in which everything falls into place but nothing is really explained. Donnie Darko would be impoverished if it tipped its hand in either direction — irrelevant and bloodless if it were to become pure science fiction; prosaic and pointless if the whole movie were explained away psychologically.

The excitement of a movie like Donnie Darko is that it can be interpreted in so many ways — where many filmmakers would be anxious to provide a key in the end, Kelly knows that by withholding a clear-cut final solution, he creates an infinitely richer film, one that equals the sum total of all these possible interpretations.
