God how can i serve you
Do you picture a young girl in a tattered dress and worn shoes? Perhaps her hair is tied back but some strands have come loose as she worked to carry out the commands of her selfish stepmother and stepsisters.
Her services are performed out of duty. The actions are there, but her motivation does not come from the heart. For those who follow Jesus , serving God is not like Cinderella at all. It is not intended to be a duty we must fulfill in order to maintain our position or to move up in status.
Christians endeavor to make themselves servants of God to honor and glorify him because of what they believe he has done for all people. Make no mistake: God does not need us to serve him. He is capable of accomplishing anything on his own. Our service cannot add to what God does; it can only magnify who he is, spread his love to those around us, and express our gratitude for what he has done.
The more I recognize how greatly flawed I am and how deeply God loves me in spite of this, the more I will take on the right mind-set about service. I will become less concerned about my service making me look good or even about accomplishing something good for my fellow man. The focus of my service will be on putting God in the spotlight, on pointing other people to God by demonstrating his marvelous love.
We can find illustrations of what it looks like to serve God by examining the life of Jesus. He could do this because he intimately knew the Father's heart. Jesus valued what the Father valued. His life demonstrates that throughout the New Testament.
Jesus showed the Father's heart when he served various groups of people, such as:. In order to serve God, we have to know him. We cannot earn heaven by serving God. That is the starting point of our Christian life. God is transforming us into the likeness of his Son , Jesus Christ 2 Corinthians So even more than what we do, the Lord is interested in how we do it. As we serve God, the most important thing to Him is what kind of people we are.
This of course does not say much about the content of our service to God. What should we do when serving God? A good summary is the Great Commandment and the Great Commission. This is the great and first commandment. We serve God through loving Him. We express our love through worshiping Him through our songs and prayers, through reading and obeying His Word , through coming together as His church, and through giving the Lord the most important place in our lives.
We also serve God through loving our neighbors. These are our family members, our relatives, our friends, our colleagues, and all people that the Lord brings on our path. So, start groups at your church that can take some of the burdens off of your pastors. Our pastors need us more than they ever say. Many people have little to no income and rely on help from the community. You can be the hands and feet of Jesus to them by serving them at a local kitchen or shelter. When you serve them their food, give them spiritual food too!
Tell them Jesus loves them. There is serious power in prayer! Become a prayer warrior! Be intentional and pray for specific people with specific needs. God always hears the prayers of those who are faithful, so take some time and pray for others in their afflictions. Being a greeter at the front door of the church is a job that most think of as not important. However, to the man or woman who walks into your church for the first time, it is a huge deal. We have the privilege of showing our joy for Jesus right at the front door.
Some people leave everlasting marks on a person just by the way they greet them. I remember how welcoming my church was the first time I stepped one foot in it. The greeter made me feel like I was part of the church family by the way they smiled and welcomed me in with a gentle and warm spirit.
Adoption is one of the most amazing things to me. So many children long for a mommy and a daddy. Can you imagine being orphaned? Can you imagine the loneliness and despair that it brings? If you have the means, please consider adoption. Choose a child to love as your own son or daughter, just as God chose you! This year all of the brand new shoes collected were able to give hundreds of kids a simple item that they could not afford. Can you imagine life without shoes?
These kids lived that life. They will never forget the kindness shown to them. That is what charity is all about! Showing kindness and love through Jesus to the people in need! Being a mentor to someone younger than you is a very rewarding experience for you both. I hang out with one man in particular around once or twice a month to see how he is doing and to pray with him. We have become very good friends because of this and I know that it was only through mentorship that this happened.
Ask them to hang out. Spend time talking and walking with them through their struggles. Watch them grow stronger in their walk each day. You will also grow stronger through this. You may be the only one that this person will confide in.
God has blessed us all with gifts and talents. Use them for the kingdom! Are you good with construction? Help with the things that need fixed in the church! Can you play an instrument or sing? Join the praise team! Do you like to act? Join the drama team! Do you enjoy public speaking? Become a preacher or a teacher! God has given you talents for a reason. You can impact the church and the community greatly through your service! Serving God is an amazing experience! There are so many more ways than what I have written to serve our Lord.
God bless you as you live a life worthy of the calling!
